Description
Live edge, scorched larch, garden bench approximately 243cm long and 44cm high. The 10cm thick seat varies from 25cm to 31cm in width.
The bench has been shaped with drawknife and angle grinder prior scorching. Carefully following the grain at the boundary between sapwood and heartwood retains the live edge but removes the non durable sapwood. A slight twist in the upper surface has been retained for character and to help shed water.
The bench sits on two simple rectangular scorched larch legs with concealed mortice and tenon joints. The mortice and tenon joints are fixed in place with seasoned oak pegs. More on the making process from tree to bench can be found in the workshop blog.
The finish is achieved using a traditional Japanese technique of charring or scorching to protect the wood from the elements. It is also great for sustainable, contemporary, garden furniture as no chemical preservative treatment is required.
The level of scorch is fairly shallow and has been lightly sanded to reveal the grain of the larch. Subtle marks from the saw chain, parallel to the grain, have been left as part of the story of the making process. After sanding the bench is finished with 3 coats of Fiddes wood oil to encapsulate the charred surface. This creates a slight sheen making the bench easier to wipe down. It also means the bench can be used without fear of charcoal marks on your summer clothes!
The base of the legs are raised on rubber feet to prevent the timber sitting in standing water. A concealed, galvanised fixing bracket is also provided to ensure the bench is not accidentally overturned.
The garden bench price includes free delivery to mainland UK. Please Contact me to confirm delivery costs to other areas.
Every item has a makers mark and unique tally style number on the base. The makers mark is an abstract axe approximately 2cm long.
